Pride Month – Honoring History, Celebrating Community
Pride commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. In response to ongoing police harassment, LGBTQIA+ individuals—led in large part by trans women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera—courageously resisted during a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Their bravery ignited a movement for dignity, justice, and equality. One year later, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, laying the foundation for an annual tradition of protest, celebration, and visibility.
Today, Pride honors the legacy of LGBTQIA+ activism and liberation movements, while uplifting the love, resilience, and creativity of LGBTQIA+ people. It’s a time to reflect on hard-won progress, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and celebrate the vibrant, intersectional identities that make up this community.
The LGBTQIA+ community is rich and diverse. Despite ongoing and increasing threats to their rights, safety, and well-being, LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies have continued to fight for equality, promote education and inclusion, and make lasting contributions to every sector of society. We live in a more compassionate, joyful, and just world because of our LGBTQIA+ friends, neighbors, and loved ones.
Here in Oregon and across the Portland metro area, Pride is also local. From grassroots advocacy to affirming community spaces, LGBTQIA+ people are shaping a more inclusive future—one that honors their identities, families, and stories.
At THPRD, we stand proudly with the LGBTQIA+ community. We are committed to removing barriers to participation and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, included, and free to be their full selves. In our parks, programs, and services, we celebrate the beauty of self-expression and the power of belonging—during Pride Month and every day of the year.
